"Bipolar Brunch" at the Frigid Festival
Bipolar Brunch, a play by Molly Kirschner.
In this comedy about bipolar disorder, a weekly brunch event brings together an eruptive sixteen-year-old (Cay played by Adi Israel) obsessed with photosynthesis, a young life coach/drug dealer (Cole played by Tom Stilwell), a 73-year-old choreographer (Bridget played by Deborah Oster Pannell), a man who introduces himself as a famous fue flutist (Paul played by Rick Benson), and the 35-year-old botanist (Celene played by Molly Kirschner) who organized the event and is trying desperately to hold everyone together.
In spite of the obvious point of connection (they all have bipolar disorder), the characters struggle to remain civil to one another, let alone find common ground. In the process, a new love begins between improbable candidates, redemption germinates, and the one stable individual of the bunch takes a sojourn from reality while changing her medication regimen.
The play is an intergenerational comedy in which characters grapple with various facets of this protean illness, and strive for acceptance and community.
At the Q&A after the reading, the cast got asked about the process of understanding the characters and about the dynamic between them. Also, the audience praised the actors for their performance.
